Lame Duck Hut
Lame Duck Hut 2008.
The Lame Duck Hut is jointly owned by the West Coast Branch of the NZDA and Safari Club International New Zealand Chapter. We are responsible for the hut maintenance, however as it is situated on the Karangarua River in the Westland National Park the Department of Conservation can dictate the colour scheme.
The hut was built in 2008 by members of NZDA West Coast and SCINZ to replace the derelict Lame Duck Hut. James Scott donated the helicopter time that was required. Originally part of the old McCormicks hut, which was left at the confluence of the Copland and Karangarua Rivers after being removed from a ridge above the Franz Josef Glacier, was to be used. This hut didn’t make it all the way to its new site having to be dropped for safety reasons by the chopper transporting it.
The hut was now due for some maintenance and a repaint. Two members of the NZDA West Coast and Bob Richmond flew in with James Scott on Wednesday 2nd March, tidied up and repainted the hut and flew out on Friday 4th March just before the weather packed up. There is still a little bit of finishing to be completed but this can be done at any convenient time.
